|¨ Female genital mutilation is a culturally condoned practice whereby female genitalia are altered or injured for non-medical reasons. Almost 3 million African girls are at risk annually.
¨ Women are killed by relatives in the name of family honour for all sorts of presumed misdemeanours from being raped to premarital sex. UNFPA estimates that the annual honour killing toll worldwide is over 5000.
¨ Traditional punishments like stoning, whipping and lashing are now joined by innovations like acid attacks and bride-burning to enforce or punish the way individual women choose to live.
