VAWM Fact From Prajnya 2

Prenatal sex selection

¨ In India three million female foetuses are aborted each year.

¨ In 1991 there were 945 women for every 1,000 men. The ratio dropped to 927 females per 1,000 males in 2001.

¨ Another way to look at it: Approximately 700,000 girls go missing in the country every year.

¨ 10 million sex selective abortions are estimated between 1981 and 2005.

¨ The ban on misusing prenatal diagnostics for sex selection took ten years to become operational.
